The Nature Program
The nature program at Indian Valley Day Camp is
really "growing". IVDC campers visit the nature hut each
week to learn about and experience different aspects of earth science,
life science and the natural environment. The goal of IVDC nature is
to teach campers about the living, organic world around them through
observation, hands-on activities, and educational games.
For the summer of 2001, campers began their nature
fun by creating unique clay planters and growing their own plants from
seedlings to watch them grow during the first few weeks of camp.
Other nature projects and activities include homemade volcanoes, clay
fossils, pinecone birdfeeders, inchworm bookmarks, seashell jewelry,
scavenger hunts, fishing and nature trivia. Future plans include Styrofoam
insects, seashell angels, sand mosaics, an outdoor mural, pet picture
frames and veggie-print t-shirts.
Nature at IVDC adds to and reflects the camp's
outdoorsy atmosphere while enlightening the campers about the importance
and complexity of their environment, doing so in a fun way.
The Nature Club
In addition to the standard nature program, there is
also a nature club. This small group enjoys working together on many
creative endeavors involving nature and science such as chia people, small
herb gardens, window boxes, beaded planters and insect huts.
